4. Bing Bong’s Sacrifice, Inside Out

Why so much death, Pixar?! Inside Out ended with a lesson about accepting sadness, and it certainly made us feel that emotion in this scene. Imaginary friend Bing Bong didn’t just die to save Joy, he got erased from Riley’s memory. Unlike other sad moments, there is no silver lining here.
3. When Somebody Loved Me, Toy Story 2
While the first Toy Story filled us with excitement that our toys might be alive, the second made us feel terrible for treating them so badly. Jessie’s heartbreaking flashback, which shows how she grew apart from her owner Emily, would usually be the saddest moment in a franchise…
2. The Furnace, Toy Story 3
But it’s not, thanks to this scene which tore every Toy Story fan’s heart into little tiny pieces. Deep down, we know that the series wouldn’t end with our heroes being incinerated but – damn it – the moment where the toys hold hands and the flame is reflected in their eyes made us believe it.
1. The Opening, Up
Despite that, the beginning of Up has to be the saddest Pixar scene ever, as we run through Carl and Ellie’s entire lifetime together. It’s also one of the studio’s most adult moments, teaching kids about getting older and how your dreams might not pan out. Oh no, here I go again. Why is the keyboard soaking wet?

Had to be Up as number 1 no one can argue that. It’s not a good pixar movie unless it has one moment that truly plucks at your heart strings. Great list. One of my favourites not on the list is the plane sequence in the Incredibles. When the missiles hit and the captive Mr Incredible believes his wife and children have been blown up.

Thanks! I actually nearly put that one in. Terrific moment, that. It’s really quite a dark scene for Pixar.

It’s one of the strongest pixar films because of its tonal shifts. Truly the best Fantastic Four movie made to date. I think that moment gets lost amongst the many pixar has, especially with the toy story films building those moments so perfectly.

Very true. I agree, people often forget how brilliant The Incredibles is. It just balances the superhero stuff with the family dynamic so well.
