The Harry Potter prequel movies have found their young version of Albus Dumbledore…
Ever since it was revealed that the sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would feature the future Hogwarts headmaster, it has been hotly contested who would nab the role. Now we finally know – it’s Jude Law, star of Sherlock Holmes, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and many more.
The sequel will explore the rivalry between Gellert Grindelwald, the worst wizard in the world during the 1920s, when the film is set, and his old friend Albus Dumbledore. Law will be squaring off against Johnny Depp, who debuted as Grindelwald in the first movie.
Law will be the third actor to take on the iconic role. First, Richard Harris played the part in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets. From Prisoner of Azkaban to The Deathly Hallows: Part Two, Michael Gambon inhabited the character. Toby Young also stood in for a teenage Dumbledore in Part Two.
Fantastic Beasts 2 is the second in a planned five-movie franchise, so we should expect to see Law’s incarnation several more times over the next few years.
