NEWS FLASH: Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot Officially In The Works

There have been rumours for years, but now it’s actually happening – Joss Whedon is co-helming  a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with a new lead actress….

Deadline reported last night that Midnight, Texas creator Monica Owusu-Breen is attached as showrunner with original series creator Joss Whedon on hand to exec produce. The Buffy reboot is only in its earliest stages of development and will be pitched to streaming and cable networks later this year.

Fans can expect an all-inclusive show, as Deadline tells us that the new star slayer will be played by an African-American actress. The producers have said:

“Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.”

Naturally, Buffy lovers are in two minds about this announcement as not everyone wants to see a complete reboot of the beloved series. However, it’s worth pointing out that Deadline’s original write-up makes no mention of Buffy herself being played by an African-American star just that the “new slayer” will be. So it’s possible reboot is being used as a catch-all term and it could actually be a continuation of the original show.

  1. a reboot as a show in itself could be very good. The concept is unique and awesome and with joss Whedon involved it holds a lot of promise. I wouldn’t be able to look at it like Buffy though. those days have come and gone. those characters can’t be played by anyone else. The final episode kind of cut down the possibility of secrecy. slayers were called all over the world, in all generations. (how I loved that scene!!!) wonder if the watchers counsel will have a role and how they’ll be able to fit into the story why Spike and angel aren’t around. also where will they pic up the story. The comics continued. …

    1. Yeah, I think I would prefer a continuation so we don’t have new actors as those characters. But, like you say, it might be difficult to follow on from that awesome final scene. That’s true, they would have to take the comics into account as well.

Because Whedon is involved, though, I’d like to think he wouldn’t just remake the original show and would make it more of a sequel or a follow-up, just with a different Slayer as the star.

I agree, the concept is so awesome and Buffy herself is such an icon that I am excited to see more. But I’m also worried at the same time!

  2. I’m hoping more a continuation or spin off than a reboot. Buffy is one of those things I’d prefer left alone but there’s always room to follow a different slayer on her journey.
