The latest Rebels episode continues the momentum of the premiere as well as giving us a vision of future episodes…
Tensions rise as it is revealed that Darth Maul is back and he’s holding Hera, Sabine, Zeb & Chopper hostage. With this leverage, Maul instructs Kanan and Ezra to bring the Sith and Jedi holocrons to him or the rest of their crew dies. Kanan and Ezra meet with the Bendu and explain the situation and how Maul wants both holocrons. Bendu recognizes right away that the dark side user intends to combine the two and states that it is very dangerous. This is because of its potential to reveal hidden truths, information that could cause chaos if it were to fall into the wrong hands.
However with the lives of their friends in the balance, neither Kanan or Ezra has much choice the matter and Ezra asks if Bendu will give the holocron or not. The Bendu responses saying “The object you seek is a source of imbalance between you and teacher.” He goes on to explain that he has hidden the holocron deep inside a cave and that they have to work together if they are to recover it. It during this time that both master and student open up to one another, with Ezra expressing his guilt over the events that led Kanan’s injury on Malachor. Kanan finally takes the opportunity to express that he does not blame Ezra for what happened and that is time to forgive and move forward. They eventually locate the Sith holocron and both master and apprentice use the force together to retrieve it, with Kanan reminding Ezra to remain calm so they do not agitate the spiders.
Finally they meet with Darth Maul who immediately ushers Ezra to the command center while he underhandedly dispatches Kanan out of an airlock in attempt to kill him once again, but the Jedi manages to get back into base and saves the Ghost crew in the process. Meanwhile Maul and Ezra use their respective dark side and light side abilities to fuse the holocrons together creating a blinding light in which reveals the secrets of the universe. While Hera and the others are unable to see anything, Kanan through the Force is able to make out the outline of Ezra and Maul through the combined light of the holocrons. He manages to dissuade Ezra from looking any further reminding him of Bendu’s warning. Maul manages to escape in the confusion of the resulting concussive blast. Ezra is unharmed but recalls some of the images he saw, some familiar and others unfamiliar.
“The Holocrons of Fate” is definitely setting up for some big events to come which makes Star Wars fan like me excited. Those who watched the episode know what I am talking about and for those who haven’t I suggest you watch it for yourself to see what I mean. In the meantime I will look forward to the next chapter in the ever evolving story of the Ghost crew.
