Current Doctor Peter Capaldi will step down from the role after the next season of the show, it has been revealed…
The 58-year-old actor took up the role in 2014’s ‘Deep Breath’, after Matt Smith regenerated in 2013 Christmas special ‘The Time of the Doctor.’ Since then, Capaldi has starred in three series, the last of which begins on April 15th. He will be joined by Pearl Mackie as new companion Bill and Matt Lucas as returning ally Nardole.
The series is also the last of current showrunner Steven Moffat. Both Moffat and Capaldi will leave the show after the 2017 Christmas special. The showrunner position will be filled by Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch). The big question now is: who will be the next Doctor?
Here’s what Capaldi had to say:
“This [season] will be the end for me… I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic programme to work on. I can’t praise the people I work with more highly, but I have always been someone that did a lot of different things. I’ve never done one job for three years, this is the first time I’ve done this. And I feel it’s time for me to move on to different challenges.”
