10 Amazing Easter Eggs in Powerless: Wayne or Lose

Starro the Conqueror

In a quick flashback, we see Emily at home while a massive tentacular monster is attacking the city outside. Fans will recognise this beastie as Starro the Conqueror, an alien enemy of the Justice League from the 1960s. A green light hits it, so we can assume that Green Lantern is on the scene somewhere off-camera.

Big Belly Burger

The Big Belly Burger fast food chain is regularly featured in The CW’s Arrowverse shows and it seems that the company is popular in the Powerlessverse too – as their logo can be seen above. That supports a running joke made on The Flash that the company is common throughout the multiverse.

Shazam!

Danny Pudi’s Teddy jokes at one point that they can’t just solve their problems by shouting the word “Shazam!” and summoning a wizard. This is, of course, a reference to DC hero Shazam (AKA Captain Marvel). Billy Batson is an ordinary kid until he summons the power of the wizard Shazam and becomes a fully-grown superhero.

The Joker

At the end of the episode, the Wayne Security team watch a news report about Batman stopping the Joker with the aid of their new invention. In the background, we see the criminal being taken away by police – with a bag over his head. By the way, the news reader’s name is Marv Wolfman – a prolific DC comics writer known for creating the Teen Titans.

The gang also moan that they wish they worked for Batman. The joke is that they do: as their company is owned by Bruce Wayne.

Van Wayne

Speaking of Bruce Wayne, the Wayne Security division is run by his bumbling cousin Van. While the character might sound made up for TV, he is actually based off an obscure character from an issue of Batman back in 1962. Vanderveer Wayne was Bruce’s spoilt cousin who liked to dress up and pretend to be Batman – unaware that his cuz actually was Batman.
