NEWS FLASH: John Simm’s Master Returning to Doctor Who

John Simm – who played the Doctor’s nemesis the Master opposite David Tennant – will make an appearance in the new series of Doctor Who…

The role of the evil Time Lord has since been taken up by Michelle Gomez, the first female incarnation of the character who goes by the name ‘Missy.’

“I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back,” said Simm, in a statement to the BBC. “It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series.“

Steven Moffat, writer and executive producer, added: “Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what the Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor. It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.”

It had previously been revealed that Gomez would return in this season’s two-part finale, opposite the Cybermen – in their original 1966 incarnation, no less. Presumably, Simm will appear in that story, as well.

This will be the first time that Simm has appeared in the show since 2010, when his character was plunged back into the Time War with the other Time Lords in ‘The End of Time: Part Two.’

Personally, this is hugely exciting news, as Simm’s incarnation is my favourite version of the Master. Just as funny and energetic as Tennant, he made the perfect dark mirror to the Doctor. It should be a blast to see him face off against Capaldi’s Doctor and his future self. In fact, you might say that…
