John Hurt’s 12 Greatest Sci-Fi/Fantasy Roles

Garrick Ollivander – Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone/The Deathly Hallows: Parts One and Two (2001-11)

Hurt’s role in the Harry Potter franchise was a small one in terms of screentime but also a significant one, as wise wandmaker Ollivander. “The wand chooses the wizard, Mr Potter.”

Trevor Bruttenholm – Hellboy/Hellboy: The Golden Army (2004-08)

Guillermo Del Toro cast Hurt as Hellboy’s eccentric yet kindly adoptive father, in his supernatural superhero movie Hellboy. He later reprised the role in The Golden Army.

Adam Sutler – V For Vendetta (2005)

In a clever mirror of his 1984 role, Hurt was cast as totalitarian, fascist dictator Adam Sutler in this adaptation of Alan Moore’s dystopian comic book classic. England prevails!

Professor Oxley – Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

It might be the worst Indy movie, but it was still nice to see Hurt pop up as Dr Jones’ old college pal Professor ‘Ox’ Oxley, who is caught up in the alien mystery, in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The Great Dragon – Merlin (2008-12)

Who better to voice a wise, talking dragon than John Hurt? The dragon, later called Kilgarrah, acted as Merlin’s mentor and occasional enemy across the five seasons of the BBC TV show.

The War Doctor – Doctor Who (2013)

In 50th anniversary special ‘The Day of the Doctor’, it was revealed that there was another incarnation of the Doctor we had never previously met – John Hurt’s tragic Time Lord who fought in the Time War.

He might have only played the role once, but John Hurt will always be the Doctor.
