A new DC movie is in the works – an origins story for the Joker featuring a new, currently uncast actor in the role of the Clown Prince of Crime…
Deadline has revealed that the movie, currently going by the working title The Joker, will be the first in a new series of films that will sit outside the continuity of the DC Extended Universe, allowing acclaimed filmmakers and new actors to tackle these iconic characters.
For example, The Joker will be produced by Martin Scorcesee and directed/scripted by The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips. Like we said, it will tell the origins story of the Clown Prince of Crime. As such, it won’t see Jared Leto reprise his role from Suicide Squad. Though, to be clear, this doesn’t mean he won’t play the role again, as The Joker is outside of the DCEU.
According to Deadline: “The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime story set in early-80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.” They also clarify that this “isn’t part of any other iteration.”
