With Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children in cinemas, we look at the best fictional schools that house students with special abilities.
5. Sunnydale High
In retrospect, building Sunnydale High on top of a Hellmouth (a centre of mystical convergence) wasn’t a great idea, as the high emotions of the students often led to the rules of reality being warped – there were lonely kids who went invisible, hyena-possessed bullies… Oh well, at least it had a vampire slayer as its Class Protector (not to mention her witchy or ex-demon friends).
4. Smallville High
Similarly, Smallville High happened to be situated in a town hit by meteor rocks that could give the kids super powers. Unfortunately, it also had the side effect of making them mentally unhinged and prone to murderous outbursts. As such, also like Sunnydale, there is a high risk of student mortality at Smallville. But at least they can say they went to school with Superman.
3. Sky High
On the lighter side of things, Sky High is a high school exclusively for the offspring of the world’s superheroes and tutors them in the ways of becoming either a hero themselves or a sidekick (depending on their power levels). It’s not easy for the kids stuck in sidekick class but, hey, at least it’s situated on a cloud and Wonder Woman is the principal.
2. Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry
This one needs no introduction. Despite its high probability of meeting some grisly monster or death eater attack, we all wanted to attend the world’s greatest school of magic when we were younger (or now, actually). Many eleven year olds have wasted away sitting in front of their letterboxes and chimneys waiting for that elusive Hogwarts invitation to arrive.
1. Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters
In a world where those with special abilities are feared, Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters -located in Westchester, New York – is a safe haven. From the outside it’s a regular boarding school, but behind closed doors the eponymous gifted youngsters are trained as X-Men and taught to use their powers to save the world from those who mean to cause it harm.
