A Guide to Every Version of The Doctor on Doctor Who

The Non Canon Doctors

Dr Who (1966-67)

Played by: Peter Cushing

Doctor Who? To capitalise on the show (and the Daleks’) success, two big-screen movies were made in the sixties – titled Dr Who and the Daleks and Dalek Invasion Earth 2150. They rebooted the central character as a human scientist who invented a time machine – and his name was not the Doctor but Dr Who. Personality-wise, Dr Who was a whimsical, kindly old man.

The Curse of Fatal Death Doctors (1998)

Played by: Rowan Atkinson, Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, Joanna Lumley

Doctor Who? For 1998’s Comic Relief telethon, future Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffat penned this hilarious spoof of the show – which featured the Doctor blasting through all his remaining regenerations in one night (including becoming a woman!). Watch the entire skit above. You’ll thank me later.

The Shalka Doctor (2003)

Played by: Richard E. Grant

Doctor Who? Richard E. Grant got another chance to play the Doctor in this six-part animated serial ‘The Scream of the Shalka’ released online. This brooding, gloomy incarnation was fully intended to be an official new Doctor, but was written out of continuity when the series returned in 2005.
