Reviewing Smallville (Season Eight)

19. Stiletto

Lois becomes the sexy superhero Stiletto. Lots of fun, especially the final Lois/Red-Blue Blur interview that called back to Superman: The Movie. Another strong one for Clois fans. 8.5/10

20. Beast

I like the Davis-centric episodes but this one wasn’t the best. Perhaps because Chloe’s motivations are hard to understand and Jimmy’s drug addiction is just so unlikely. 8/10

21. Injustice

Another one that wasn’t as good as it could have been. The Injustice League weren’t that interesting and there’s too much Tess. Still, nice fake-out involving Chloe. 8/10

22. Doomsday

Damn this finale! After some great build-up, it totally bungles the big fight between Clark and Doomsday and too much is left unexplained. Still, at least there a shocking death. 8/10

Verdict: Like always, this season of Smallville has its ups and downs. On the one hand, the loss of Lex hits the series hard, as Tess Mercer is an inferior replacement, and the ‘Return of Lana Lang’ arc is a real chore to sit through. Not to mention that the season fumbles the landing – after building up Davis Bloome as a terrific, tragic villain – in the final episode.

And yet, in other ways, season eight is the best run yet. Notably, Clark is finally at the Daily Planet and saving people in Metropolis! Most of all, though, Clark and Lois’ relationship finally kicks into gear as their feelings for each other begin to heat up. Any scene between Tom Welling and Erica Durance is a delight. With Lex out the picture, they are the real reason to watch the show.
