We already knew that she would appear in this year’s big Arrowverse crossover, now we know that The CW plan on spinning Batwoman off into her own show…
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, here’s how they described the series:
Batwoman revolves around Kate Kane, who, armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet: in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
It sounds like Batwoman will have a similar set-up as The CW’s Supergirl, then. With their more famous male counterpart out of the way, it will focus on Kate Kane being a hero in her own right. Fans will also note the importance of Kate being openly gay in the show. That will make her the first LGBT solo lead of a superhero TV series ever.
Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) is set to be showrunner with Arrowverse mainstay Greg Berlanti filling his usual role as exec producer. It is rumored that the network is looking for a LGBT actress to bring the part of Kate Kane to life. This will be the character’s first ever live-action adaptation.
We will first meet Batwoman this December during the aforementioned crossover. Some fans think the character might hail from Supergirl‘s Earth-38 but this is just speculation at this point. If you ask us, that would be a terrific idea, though, as it would help flesh out that world.
