Still the most famous Wonder Woman of all time is Lynda Carter – the star of the Wonder Woman TV show which thankfully based itself off the comic books. For instance, it featured the character’s Amazonian background, her love interest Steve Trevor and supporting characters like Queen Hippolyta and Wonder Girl. The first season took place during war time but, due to falling ratings, the setting was changed to the 1970s for subsequent seasons.

There was a big gap before the next significant iteration of Wonder Woman arrived on screen. Following on from the smash hit Batman and Superman animated series, a Justice League series was created – uniting Bats and Supes with Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Hawgirl and, of course, Diana Prince. From the third season onward, the show was rechristened Justice League Unlimited and featured a much bigger cast of heroes.

Throughout the 2000s, Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator – and later The Avengers director – Joss Whedon tried to get a Wonder Woman movie off the ground. Many actresses were linked with the role – including Angelina Jolie, Beyonce, Megan Fox, Sandra Bullock and Whedon regulars like Eliza Dushku and Charisma Carpenter. Eventually, Whedon left the project due to difficulties with the studio. The movie plans also prevented the character from appearing on Smallville.
