8. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Shirley Walker
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is a forgotten masterpiece, as is its terrifically atmospheric version of the theme from BTAS. As indicative of Batman as Elfman and Zimmer’s work.
7. Unbreakable, James Newton Howard
Unbreakable is a very unusual entry into the superhero movie canon, and James Newton Howard’s score is one of the most distinctive – and moving – superhero themes you’ll ever hear.
6. The Incredibles, Michael Giacchino
The Incredibles draws from James Bond films as much as it does superhero fiction, so Michael Giacchino’s score is a playful blend of John Barry-esque trumpets and superhero motifs.
5. X-Men 2, John Ottman
The X-Men movies have had many different themes but X-Men 2‘s – coincidentally the best film – is the one that sums up the franchise. It later returned for Days of Future Past and Apocalypse.
